Lip-Bu Tan: Trump fordert Intel-CEO zum Rücktritt auf, Tan trifft Trump
Nach dem Brief eines Senators mit Beschuldigungen gegen Intel-CEO Lip-Bu Tan mischt sich US-Präsident Trump ein und fordert Tans sofortigen Rücktritt. Die Anschuldigungen richten sich primär gegen Lip-Bu Tans Portfolio in der Vergangenheit mit starkem Bezug zu China.
Lip-Bu Tans Vergangenheit holt ihn ein
Bereits im April dieses Jahres hatte Reuters berichtet, dass Intels neuer Chef in der Vergangenheit ein breit gestreutes Beteiligungsportfolio in China hatte bzw. zum Teil noch hat. Dies ist aber nicht illegal, sofern die Investitionen vor möglichen Sanktionen stattgefunden hätten. Tan soll den Berichten zufolge mindestens 200 Millionen US-Dollar in Hunderte kleine Firmen in China investiert haben; als Zeitraum wurde März 2012 bis Dezember 2024 genannt.
Das Nachrichtenportal fand damals allerdings keine Beweise, dass Tan etwas Unrechtes getan habe. Die Geschichte wurde nicht weiterverfolgt.
Nun kommt sie jedoch mit großem Knall wieder an die Oberfläche. Vermutlich auch ausgelöst durch das Schuldbekenntnis von Cadence in der letzten Woche, das illegal Technologie an China verkauft haben soll. Lip-Bu Tan war von 2008 bis 2021 CEO von Cadence und bis 2023 Executive Chairman. Cadence muss deshalb eine Strafzahlung von 140,6 Millionen US-Dollar leisten, damit die Sache vom Tisch ist.
Nicht aber für Lip-Bu Tan, wie es scheint. Der republikanische US-Senator Tom Cotton eröffnete mit einem Brief, der an die Medien gestreut wurde, eine Kampagne gegen Intels Chef.

Intel nahm dies laut Reuters zur Kenntnis und erklärte, man wolle die Dinge mit dem Senator klären. Ob es dazu nun kommen wird, ist nach einem Social-Media-Post von US-Präsident Trump allerdings fraglich. Er fordert darin den sofortigen Rücktritt des Intel-Chefs – es gebe einfach keine andere Lösung.
Nahezu überall wurde das Posting mit kompletter Überraschung aufgenommen. Intels Aktie reagierte vorbörslich sofort. Zunächst im Plus, geriet sie später deutlich ins Minus. Intel sieht sich nun zumindest zu einer Stellungnahme, möglicherweise aber auch zu weiteren Schritten gezwungen. Diese werden vermutlich schnell erfolgen.
Wie erwartet hat sich Intel schnell geäußert, ohne dabei viel zu sagen. Es verweist auf die letzten Jahrzehnte und Milliarden an Investitionen, die gerade in den USA getätigt werden. Auf die Äußerungen von US-Präsident Trump geht Intel letztlich gar nicht ein.

Das Wall Street Journal berichtete kurz zuvor, Intels neuer Chef soll bereits im Streit mit dem Aufsichtsrat liegen – wie sein Vorgänger Pat Gelsinger. Es geht dabei einmal mehr um die Fabriken und eine mögliche Abspaltung, die jedoch auch Tan als essentiell für Intel erachtet, Intel zudem in eine einzigartige Position als einzig wahrer heimischer Fertiger stellt, die TSMC oder Samsung nicht bieten kann. Tan wollte im Gegenzug lieber große AI-Firmen als Partner ins Boot holen, die auch in die Fabriken investieren; das wiederum lehnte aber das Board ab.
Laut Gerüchten geht es wohl auch US-Präsident Trump um dieses Thema, er will die Abspaltung der Fabriken. Da dies im direkten Gegensatz zu Tan steht, beginnt der Kampf via Social Media.
Nun ging auch ein umfangreiches Statement von Intels CEO Lip-Bu Tan an die Belegschaft online, die er gern direkt adressieren möchte. Demnach seien viele Falschinformationen im Umlauf, die er gern auch mit der Regierung und Administration klären möchte. Seit über 40 Jahren sei er in der Industrie, habe viele weltweite Beziehungen in der Branche über Vertrauen aufgebaut – genau das möchte er nun auch für Intel.
Gleichzeitig genieße er das Vertrauen des Aufsichtsrats, womit Tan direkt auch den Bericht des Wall Street Journals dementiert. Intel stehe vor großen Veränderungen, aber die Möglichkeiten seien vorhanden, erklärt Tan abschließend.

Laut Wall Street Journal wird Intels CEO Lip-Bu Tan bereits am heutigen Montag in Washington mit Donald Trump zusammentreffen. Dabei dürfte es sowohl um das Ausräumen der Gerüchte als auch um Intels Zukunftspläne gehen.
Apropos Intels Zukunft: Auch Ex-CEO Craig Barrett hat sich am Wochenende persönlich zu Wort gemeldet und Intel darin bestärkt, die Fabriken zu behalten. Intel benötige dafür jedoch Geld, dieses soll von Großkunden über Finanzspritzen kommen, wenn möglich.
Intel bestätigte das Treffen im Nachgang. Über das, was gesprochen wurde, gibt es aber keine Details. Es sieht aber danach aus, dass nun erst einmal kurz Ruhe einkehren könnte.
